To
mark its Centenary, Maidstone Symphony Orchestra has commissioned two new
works, which will be performed during the 2010/2011 season.
Piece 1
Composer - Malcolm Riley
Working Title - “Fairmeadow – An Overture for
Maidstone”
A concert overture of 7 to 8
minutes in length, including references to a Maidstone folk song
(collected in the 1940s) called “Death and the Lady” and to some of John
Jenkins' Fantasias for Viols. It will be for full symphony orchestra, with
triple wind, harp, piano, bells etc. Date of premiere - 16 October 2010
Piece 2
Composer - John McCabe
Working Title - “Portraits from Arthur”
An orchestral suite of music
drawing on John McCabe’s full-length ballets for Birmingham Royal Ballet,
namely Part I: Arthur Pendragon, and Part II: Le Mortd'Arthur.
It may be in three or four movements, with a combined duration of 20 to
25 minutes. It will be for full symphony orchestra, although the exact
scoring is as yet unconfirmed. Date of premiere - 26 March 2011
What you have to do
1. Using your skill and
judgement estimate the number of whole bars of music in the
conductor’s score for each Piece at its premiere.
2. Multiply those
numbers together to find your answer
3. Make as many
estimates as you wish—only £1 per entry
4. Complete the entry
form (you can download this by clicking
here) —
use more than one form if you wish.
All entries must be made
on the official entry form, but you may enter any number of completed
forms. You may use copies of the form.
Please send completed entry forms and entry fees to:
Mrs A Withnall
Treasurer, FoMOS

What will I win?
The prize is 25% of the total of all entry fees. The entry
fee is £1 per entry. So, if there are 100 entries you could win £25, and if
there are 1,000 entries it would be £250.
We hope that there will be thousands of entries, and the
more entries there are the better the prize—so please tell as many people as
you can about this competition and get them to enter it, as many times as
they wish!
When will I know if I have won?
The McCabe piece will not be submitted to the publishers
until October 2010, and there may be minor alterations thereafter. We must
close the competition before the Riley composition is complete, in June
2010, but we cannot calculate and announce the results until the McCabe work
is finalised, in March 2011.
The Small Print
Closing date for entries is Saturday 26 June 2010
A cash prize of 25% of the total of entry fees will
be awarded to the entrant closest to the correct multiple of the number of
bars as counted by the Composers. If there are two answers equally close,
the winning answer will be the one which does not exceed the correct
number. The Composers’ decision will be final. The winner will be
announced on 26 March 2011.
In the event of more than one entrant with the winning
answer, all winners will be entered into a draw to take place on 26 March
2011 at the MSO Concert at Mote Hall, Maidstone. The prize will be awarded
to the first correct entry drawn. A prize of £25 will be awarded to each of
the next 2 correct entries drawn.
Details of winners and the correct answer will appear on the
Society's website. (www.mso.org.uk) and in "Crescendo", the Society's
newsletter available at the MSO concert on 14 May 2011.
All proceeds will go towards funding the activities of
Maidstone Orchestral Society.
This competition is open to all, except the Music Director
of MSO and employees, agents, publishers, family and friends of the
Composers .
