Shostakovich – Festive Overture
Rodrigo – Guitar Concerto
Mahler – Symphony No.1
In 1954 The Bolshoi's conductor, Vassili Nebolsin, found himself without a suitable new work to open
a concert, and contacted Shostakovich just days before. The composer set to work on the overture with great speed, completing it in three days. He apparently based it on Glinka's Russlan and Ludmilla overture (1842), and it features the same lively tempo and style of melody. Some commentators have suggested that the work secretly celebrates the death of Stalin the year before.
The Concierto de Aranjuez is a composition for classical guitar and orchestra by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. Written in 1939, it is probably Rodrigo's best-known work, and its success established his reputation as one of the most significant Spanish composers of the twentieth century.
The Symphony No. 1 in D major by Gustav Mahler was mainly composed between late 1887 and March 1888, though it incorporates music Mahler had composed for previous works. It was composed while Mahler was second conductor at the Leipzig Opera, Germany. Although in his letters Mahler referred to the work as a symphony, the first two performances described it as a symphonic poem or tone poem.
